About me
Joan Rissman is a Master of Occupational Therapy student at Eastern Michigan University. She graduated from Michigan State University in 2023 with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and a Minor in Music. Hailing from the city of Clawson, Michigan, Joan's first encounter with occupational therapy was as a first grader receiving school-based OT. It taught her the power of patience and the beauty of small wins - all in the context of fun. It was clear early on that these were all values that Joan wished to pursue. As a result, Joan has had several years' worth of experience working in pediatric settings, often with children with disabilities. Pediatric occupational therapy and neurodevelopment has remained an academic and clinical interest, although her time at Eastern Michigan University's Occupational Therapy Program - and her inherent curiosity - have propelled her interest in nontraditional OT settings, such as performing arts medicine. Outside of school, Joan is a dedicated community musician. She also enjoys reading piles of books, connecting with nature, and creating fiber arts pieces.
